Rainy weather isn't putting a damper on the major gaming events happening in the South Bay this weekend.
One of the West Coast's largest video game tournaments is underway in San Jose, and it's expected to draw thousands of attendees.
At the San Jose Convention Center, the stage is set for Genesis X, the world's biggest Super Smash Bros tournament.
"It's amazing," said Eric Lew from Orlando. "The crowd, the cheers, the boos—it's like being at a sporting event, but for video games."
With the Super Bowl done, the action shifts to the South Bay, where participants are vying for a spot in the top 8 and a chance at $23,000 in prize money.
Facing off against opponents in a game beloved by many, the e-sports industry has propelled this tournament to new heights.
"It's a game everyone knows," said Jestise Negron from Las Vegas. "It's something that brings people together."
The tournament, once a small gathering, now takes over San Jose, drawing participants from around the globe.
"We've got people from 36 different countries here," said Rhanee Palma from Genesis Destination Conduit. "It's a massive event that boosts the local economy."
Indeed, the estimated $3 million economic impact benefits local businesses, including restaurants, hotels, and more.
For the gamers, it's about more than just competition—it's about community.
"I get to meet so many online friends in person," said Jazmin Schnackenberg from Wisconsin.
"Attending this event changes perceptions about gaming," Negron added. "It's about having fun and connecting with others."
The event runs all weekend in Downtown San Jose, offering activities, an arcade, vendors, and more. Tickets are available at the convention center.
